Doctoral degree

The candidate of the Mental Health Graduate Program Health must establish an early contact with the mentor in order to define the research project. To do so, the student should consult the link Research Lines in the main menu of this site, and consider the lines of research of interest and then make contact with professors and verify their availability to supervise new students.

The documents for registration, the number of places available, mentors available, items of the curriculum which are evaluated, the grade attributed to each item and the final average for approval, the topics and the literature indicated for the selection process will be published in an edict. Registration will be held at the secretariat of the program, within the period established by the Graduate Committee.

The English proficiency test must be taken before candidate selection, as it is a preliminary requirement.

The disclosure is made by publication in the national official journal (Diário Oficial), through the site www.fmrp.usp.br/cpd and sent by mail to other Faculties in the country. Access to the Graduate Program will be decided through a selective process.


Documents required for the selective process


The following documentation must be presented (Original documents accompanied by 2 copies):

  • Graduate Diploma photocopy (both sides) or Certificate of Completion;
  • Photocopy of Academic Record;
  • Two 3X4 photos;
  • Photocopy of birth or marriage certificate;
  • Photocopy of Identity Card;

  • Photocopy of C.P.F. (for brazilians) or R.N.E. (identification document for foreigners living in Brazil;
  • Photocopy of the military training certificate (brazilians only);
  • Documented Lattes CV;
  • Payment receipt of registration fee;
  • Letter of accetance signed by an accredited mentor of the program;
  • Declaration that the student has accomplish the mandatory probatory period in research, stating the period and the activities developed by the student.   • Research project to be developed during the graduate program, with the approval of the Research Ethics Committee;

Note: If at the time of selection the project is still in progress at the Research Ethics Committee, the deadline for submitting it to the secretariat of the program is of one hundred eighty days from the date of registration as a regular student.

Note: The documentation of foreign candidates must be translated complying with the Regulation.


Stages of the selective process


1st stage: English proficiency exam (TEAP) and Portuguese proficiency exam (CELPE-BRAS) – preliminary.

Note: Master””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””s and doctoral candidates are required to take the test.

Only exams acknowledged by the Graduation Committee of FMRP-USP (TEAP, TOEFL, ALLUMINI, and CAMBRIDGE IELTS) will be accepted for the English language proficiency test, and students will be considered approved achieving 60% or higher of maximum grade for the master degree and 70% of maximum grade for the doctoral degree.

A student may also be considered proficient in the English language if he/she presents comprobation of one full cycle of study (elementary school, high school or university), or at least one year of internship or course in an educational/research institution in an English speaking country.

The exam acknowledged by the Graduate Commission of FMRP-USP for proficiency in the Portuguese language is CELPE-BRAS. Students who achieve 60% or more of the maximum score will be approved.

A student may also be considered proficient in the Portuguese language if he/she presents comprobation of one full cycle of study (elementary school, high school or university), or at least one year of internship or course in an educational/research institution in a Portuguese speaking country.

2nd stage:

The candidate approved in the language proficiency exam may then apply for the Mental Health Program. The following criteria will be considered for the selection of master””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””s and doctoral students:

  • Written test based on analysis of a scientific paper (weight 3).

    Note: Students who fail to obtain a minimum score on the written test (5.0) are automatically eliminated from the subsequent stages of the selection process
  • Curricular analysis (weight 3). The analysis of the curriculum will be based on assessment of academic and scientific activities accomplished by the candidates.
  • Oral presentation of the research project, followed by oral arguments (weight 4). In the oral presentation and argumentation of the research project the candidate””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””s knowledge of the project is evaluated.

The grade of each evaluation will vary from 0 to 10 and students who achieve grade greater than or equal to 5.0 in the written test will be considered approved. Students who fail to obtain a minimum score on the written test (5.0) are automatically eliminated from the subsequent stages of the selection process. The final grade is the average of the three evaluations described before.


Subjects and literature of the Written Test for Doctoral Degree


Design of research projects and scientific papers in the areas of Psychiatry, Neurosciences and Mental Health.

Interpretation of scientific articles in the areas of Psychiatry, Neurosciences and Mental Health, with an emphasis on problem and hypothesis formulation, literature review, project design, ethical issues, investigation of variables, instruments and measures, procedures for data collection, data analysis and processing.
